Glucocorticoid therapy is widely used among critically ill patients with other corona virus infection such as SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) and MERS (middle east respiratory syndrome)

MANY PEOPLE HYPOTHESIZED THAT glucocorticoid therapy along with standard care is effective for covid -19 patients with severe acute respiratory failure   

DEXAMETHASONE is not a novel drug.It is an often used steroid with powerful anti-inflammatory properties for patients of all ages  .Dexamethasone falls under a broader class of drugs called corticosteroid,which in turn has two sub classess;glucocorticoids and mineralocorticoids .glucocorticoids have anti-inflammatory activity .mineralocortioids regulate electolyte and water balance in the body

in covid -19 patients,dexamethasone serves to dampen the body's immune response when it becomes too aggressive to control by other means .
