Which amino acid is formed, in the fewest steps, from 3-phosphoglycerate?
a. alanine
b. none of these
c. aspartate
d. glutamate
e. serine
The correct answer is option e. Serine
Serine is a non-essential alpha aminoacid. Serine consists of an alpha amino group, carboxyl group and side chains having a hydroxy methyl group. Hence it is called as polar amino acid. Serine is used for protein biosynthesis. It is essential for the metabolism and brain development.
Serine is formed in just three steps followed by the oxidation of 3- phosphoglycerate. 3- phosphoglycerate is oxidized to 3- phospho hydroxy pyruvate with the help of the enzyme 3- phosphoglycerate dehydrogenase. 3-phophohydroxy pyruvate is then transaminated to 3-phospho - L- serine with the help of enzyme PLP ( Pyridoxal phosphate). This 3-phospho - L- serine is then hydrolysed to serine.
Option a) Alanine is not the right answer because alanine is synthesized from pyruvate.
Option b) None of these is not the right answer
Option c) Aspartate is not the right answer because aspartate is synthesized from oxalo acetate.
Option d) Glutamate is not the right answer because glutamate is synthesized from alpha ketoglutaride.
