The age-old debate in the field of addiction is whether or not addiction is a disease or just merely a rational choice, a moral and personality weakness or bad habit. The biopsychosocial model of addiction attempts to resolve this debate by taking a holistic approach to addiction and treatment. Strength-based perspectives and harm reduction are also considered important, client-centered approaches to addiction today.

The biopsychosocial model, strengths approach, and harm reduction are three key themes of the eText and this course. For this week's DB, please:

1. Describe the biopsychosocial-spiritual model of addiction, and how it attempts to resolve the debate as to whether addiction is simply a disease, rational choice, or bad habit.

2. Please summarize the strengths-perspective and how it differs from traditional approaches to addiction (that often focus on loss and weaknesses).

3. Outline the philosophy and practice of harm reduction.

4. What are your thoughts on using the biopsychosocial model, strengths approach, and harm reduction to treat addiction?
