What is Duty of Care
A duty of care is the legal responsibility of a person or organization to avoid any behaviours or omissions that could reasonably be forseen to cause harm to others.
In the work place as a care worker its our resposibilty to make sure that ourselves and other people are safe in the work place.if you work as a employer you have the main resposibility for the health and safty of everyone in your work place, including visitors.this is the primary duty of care.
I would like to give an example , its my own experience as a care worker during my institutional training.
during the morning duty shift my collegue got 4 patients in her assignment, (totally 32 patients and 8 duty nurses , 1 team leader and 1 Incharge Nurse), one of her patient was 68 years old male , admitted with depression. The hospital is a 12 storied building and our assignment was in the 9th floor. My friend was busy with physcians rounds ,the abouve patient was with patient's doughter, in between we heard a shouting and crying , we ran in to the spot and found that demencia patient was jumped down through window, and spot dead. In that incident my friend and all the staffs on duty in that particular floor got faced to Police questions and follwed by court formalities, the assigned staff immediatly suspended and her liscence got banned for 2 years from working as a health worker.
From that incident onwards the hospital kept all the windows very small no one can take out heads out through that.
