Historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) are institutions of higher education in the United States that were established before 1964 with the intention of primarily serving the African American community. They have always allowed admission to students of all races. These institutions have allowed African Americans to have an opportunity to become successful, productive citizens.

2. HBCUs were established in the Southern United States after the American Civil War, often with the assistance of northern United States religious missionary organizations and AME Church of Ohio and Methodist Episcopal Church and freedman's bureau

3. Prior to the end of slavery many slaves were still illiterate. Former slaves of all ages wanted to be educated and learn to read and write. Being an uneducated African American in many eyes you were still considered a slave. 4. After the passage of the Second Morrills Act, public land-grant institutions specifically for blacks were established in each of the southern and border states. As a result, some new public black institutions were founded, and a number of formerly private black schools came under public control; eventually 16 black institutions were designated as land-grant colleges. As many unfreed man lives in southern states and as a result,many public grant lands were given and many institutions were founded.
