  • People sometimes find it difficult to work with people coming from diverse backgrounds because of language and cultural barriers. When people lack understanding of someone's culture, communication becomes difficult. And because of lack of knowledge stereotypes develop which further make it difficult to work and communicate effectively.Pre conceived notions, lack of language training, poor team spirit can all make it difficult to work with people coming from different backgrounds.
  • Diversity means differences in cultures and belief systems. These varying attitudes must be accepted and respected in the workplace in order for the business to function well. Sensitivity training should be implemented as an ongoing program, which will help individuals understand others who appear very different from themselves. This training should teach employees that all human beings have their most important concerns in common, such as the need for companionship, the desire to accomplish their work with accuracy and pride, and the feeling of being valued and appreciated.
  • An effective method of overcoming diversity concerns is a buddy program. Pair individuals in the workplace who differ in some significant way, such as an experienced worker with a novice or an employee from the local region with one who hails from a great distance away. The purpose of these two-person teams is to allow employees to get to know each other in both personal and professional terms. By working together on projects, the individuals learn how to best relate to accomplish the necessary tasks. Rotate parings on a frequent basis to give all employees the chance to work closely with each staff member.
  • Often, those who feel different from others in the workplace will shy away from interactions with other workers. They isolate themselves to the point where their job satisfaction is impacted. Engage these workers by practicing inclusion to help increase their happiness on the job. Discover the particular talents and strong points of these employees so you can highlight them.
  • For example, if an employee is capable of producing detailed designs by hand, have him present these in a team meetings so other employees can appreciate his work. Give this employee a role as chief designer on the next project so that he can use his developed drawing skills while he works closely with others. This is an example of inclusion that can help build confidence in employees who generally withdraw from team activities.
  • Diversity in the workplace is important for employees because it manifests itself in building a great reputation for the company, leading to increased profitability and opportunities for workers.
  • Individuals from diverse backgrounds can offer a selection of different talents, skills and experiences, that may be of benefit to the organisation and their work performance.
  • By working alongside people of different backgrounds, experiences and working styles, creative concepts can be born from bouncing ideas off of each other and offering feedback and suggestions. Whereas one person may be great at generating exciting, out of the box ideas, another individual may have the necessary experience to execute it; so it is essential to play on each individual’s strengths and collaborate with others in the team.
  • A company who embraces diversity will attract a wider range of candidates to their vacancies, as it will be viewed as more progressive organisation and will appeal to individuals from all walks of life.
  • Employees are more likely to feel comfortable and happy in an environment where inclusivity is a priority. Equality in the workplace is important for encouraging workers from all backgrounds to feel confident in their ability and achieve their best. The higher the team morale, the more productive employees are.
