What are at least three barriers that mothers may encounter when attempting to bond with their newborn? Please provide an example from your own experience.
Bonding is the formation of a mutual emotional and psychological closeness between parents (or primary caregivers) and their newborn child. Babies usually bond with their parents in the minutes, hours, or days following birth
Medical problems with the infant or the mother: It is one of the barrier where mother should have to stay away from the baby, when the baby is in the ICU/Incubator.
Maternal depression: mother may be unresponsive to the child because of maternal depression
Environment: A major impediment to healthy bonding is fear . If an infant is distressed because of pain , pervasive threat, or a chaotic environment, the baby may have a difficult time engaging in a sympathetic care-giving relationship
**When I was there in duty I observed teenagers and immature mothers often conceal and reject their pregnancies. If they give birth to unwanted baby they will not see the baby at all, after a big counseling she has changed her behavior and started taking her infant for bonding.
This behavior and feeling may result in abandonment, neglect, and the absence of bonding at birth.
