Given the formula equation, write the complete ionic equation, net ionic equation, and identify the spectator ions for the following reaction: (NH4)2SO4 (aq) + 2 NaOH (aq) —> Na2SO4 (aq) + 2 H2O (l) + 2 NH3 (g)
i) Molecular reaction
(NH4)2SO4(aq) + 2NaOH(aq) ------> Na2SO4(aq) +2H2O(l) + 2NH3(g)
ii) In complete ionic equation ,all the compounds which are able to dissociate completely are seperated as their aquous ions. Compounds which are partly dissociate are written the form of undissociated aquous form and compounds in the form of liquid and gas are written as such. So, the complete ionic equation is
2NH4+(aq) + SO42-(aq) + 2Na+(aq) + 2OH-(aq) -----> 2Na+(aq) + SO42-(aq) + 2H2O(l) + 2NH3(g)
iii) Net ionic equation is written by removing the ions which are not contributing in the reaction i.e which are come in both reactant and product side in the complete ionic equation. So, in the above reaction SO42- and Na+ are coming in both and reactant and product side , so, net ionic equation is written by omitting these ions ane these ions are called spectator ions.
2NH4+(aq) + 2OH-(aq) ------> 2NH3(g) + 2H2O(l)
iv) As we discussed above spectator ions are SO42- and Na+
