Identify two possible research questions for your final project. Explain why these two questions interest you and why you would like to conduct research on them. Be concise in explaining why you believe there is a need for research to be conducted on the topics you've chosen. Respond to at least two of your classmates with feedback on the questions they posted. Advise your classmates on which of the research questions they posted you think would be best for them to use. Explain why you think the question you chose would be best for them to pursue.
Topic: Biomedicalwaste management
Q 1: What are the hazads associated with biomedical waste management?
Q 2: Is the health education on biomedical waste managementto the sweepers needed is needed to promote health in intensive care units?
I have choose the 2nd question on need of biomedical waste management awareness among sweepers of intensive care units of health unit.
TITLE OF THE STUDY:
“Effect of information booklet on the knowledge of class IV employees regarding biomedical waste management in intensive care units of selected government hospital of metropolitan city.”
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM:
A study to assess effect of information booklet on the knowledge of class 4 servants regarding biomedical waste management in intensive care units in selected hospital.
HYPOTHESIS:
H01:
There will be significant difference between the pre and post test knowledge scores among class 4 servants regarding biomedical waste management.
H02:
There will be significant association between the level of knowledge regarding biomedical waste management with selected demographic variables.
Need of the study:
Hospital is one of the complex institutions which are frequented by people from every walk of life from society without any distinction between age, sex, race and religion. This is over and above the normal inhabitants of hospital i.e. patients and staff. All of them produce waste which is increasing in its amount and type due to advances in scientific knowledge and is creating its impact. The hospital waste in addition to the risk for patients and personnel who handle these wastes poses a threat to public health and environment keeping in view of inappropriate biomedical waste management, the ministry of environment and forest notified the Biomedical waste management and handling rules.
The healthcare services while providing services, curative, promotive or preventive inevitably create waste which itself may be hazardous to health. It carries a higher potential for infection and injury than any other type of waste. Inadequate and inappropriate knowledge of handling of healthcare waste may have serious health consequences and a significant impact on the environment as well as on the health.
The absence of proper waste management, lack of awareness about the health hazards from biomedical wastes, insufficient financial and human resources, and poor control of waste disposal are the most critical problems connected with healthcare waste. The hospital waste management has diverse ramifications as it not only affects the health of patients but also of healthcare workers (doctors, nurses, attenders and housekeeping staff etc.) and general public. Apart from lack of awareness the hospital personnel seem to ignore standard procedures. Waste handling and disposal is often considered only the job of class IV worker. These workers are rarely provided with PPE, immunization or training.
The activities that are commonly done in the health care waste management are segregation, storage, collection, transportation and disposal of health care waste. It encompasses, planning, organizational, administrative, financial, legal, engineering aspects and human resource development and their management involves inter disciplinary relationships.
While health care establishments and other hospitals in developed countries confirm to certain safety standards laid out by regulatory bodies on collecting, transporting and disposing of health care wastes, the same is not often true in developing countries where the level of awareness about the adverse impact of improper disposal of such waste is low, the regulatorytools are inadequate and the skills, resources and necessary motivation are absent.
The present study reveals that the practice of health care waste management is inadequate and rudimentary. There is a need to improve the awareness levels as well as practice of health care waste management appropriately for which necessary training and follow up are required for class IV employees of selected government hospital.
Adequate knowledge about the health hazard of hospital waste, proper technique and methods of handling the waste, and practice of safety measures can go a long way toward the safe disposal of hazardous hospital waste and protect the community from various adverse effects of the hazardous waste. With this background, this study was conducted with the main objective of assessing knowledge, attitude, and practices of doctors, nurses, laboratory technicians, and other staff regarding health care waste management.
This study review helped the investigator to clear her concept, developed in depth understanding of the issue and in formulating the questionnaire. It also helped the investigator to have a wider understanding of the topic of the study. The investigator gained knowledge which contributed to the preparation the tool, methodology, and the plan for data collection and analysis.
In this study, the effect of independent variable that is information booklet can be studied by evaluating, analysing, and comparing with the pre and post-test knowledge scores and their association with demographic variables by formulating questionnaires and provding information booklet on biomedical waste management.Information booklet can be prepared with attractive pictures. This study can help usin maintaining standard protocols and policies in clinical practice in hospital and hence can contribute to the effective health practices in health promotion.
