What is my role in the care of patients that are receiving IV antibiotics or have an IV?
Role of registered nurse in the care of patient receiving iv antibiotics :
1)Administration of I.V antibiotics involves more than simply infusing the right dose to the right patient at the right time.
2) You ( Registered nurse) must be aware of drug's action, its potential side effects,preca precautions related to the drug.
3) You should know specific nursing interventions in the event of an untoward reaction.
4) You should konw the patient's medical history.
5) A previous allergic reaction to any drug or history of multiple allergies may identify a susceptible patient.
6)For the patients with no previous history of drug allergic reaction, observe for utricaria,dyspnea,nasal congestion, angioedema or local reaction at the iv site.
7)If any of these symptoms develop, discontinue the drug and notify the physician immediately.
8) For patients who have positive history of allergies or who will be receiving an antibiotic likely to cause an allergic reaction, the nurainn interventions are specific.
9) If no untoward reaction occur during infusion, check the patient every 30 min for 24 hours.
10) Instruction of the patient to report any unusual symptoms immediately.
11) Again, if the patient cannot communicate, assess him more frequently for signs and symptoms of allergic reaction.
12) The most severe allergic reaction is anaphylaxis.It occurs inspite of all precautions taken and institute treatment immediately.
13) Provide psychological support to the patient will help in reducing the anxiety of the patient.
