The nurse is providing care for two patients in an urgent care setting. Both have been suffering from nausea and vomiting for 24 hours. Patient A was found to have gallstones and an infected gallbladder and has a white blood cell (WBC) count of 27,000. Patient B was found to have a poorly functioning gallbladder with no stones and no infection. Patient B’s WBC count is normal and he denies pain. Patient A is scheduled for gallbladder surgery immediately. Patient B is given a referral to a local surgeon’s office. What type of surgery will each have and what is an explanation for the different approaches with each patient?
In this scenario both patient need surgery but based on the patient condition patient A has posted for surgery and b for referral.
1-urgent or emergency surgery. Based on condition of patient" A" he need immediate surgery without delay these type of surgery called emergency or urgent surgery.in this case patient has diagnosed with gallstone and also infected based on WBC count infection is high and it's need to be fix immediately other wise there is a chance to get septic shock and can lead to death.to prevent such complications patient has posted for surgery immediately
2-Elective surgery-elective surgery means patient need surgery but it's not a life threatening it can be postponed based on different factors.in this second case patient BPatient has problem with gall bladder still it's functions and there is no pain or infection .That is the reason doctor decided to take this case as elective surgery and referd to a local surgeons clinic.
