We have discussed several factors that are used in market segmentation.

  • Demographic factors included Age, Gender, Income, Wealth, Social Class, Race, Ethnicity, Religion, Household Composition, Marital Status, Presence of Children,
  • Psychographic factors included Behaviors, Attitudes, Lifestyles, etc.
  • Geographic (e.g. lives in New York vs. lives in California)
  • Behavioral (has certain usage patterns, brand expectations, brand loyal, price sensitive)

It’s easy to provide examples of segmentation based on demographics or geography. But explore the 15 different psychographic segmentation possibilities. In a page paper, choose a product category that you’re interested in (like automobiles, laundry detergents, or toothpaste) or a service category (like retail stores, restaurants, banking or tourism) that uses at least three of these types of segmentation. Explain how different brands within the category appeal to these different segments. Be sure to include examples of specific brands within the category and how they position themselves to appeal to the specific segments.
