Discuss the systems development life cycle as applied to project management: Initiation, Planning, Acquisition or design and development, Implementation, Operations/Maintenance, Disposition/Disposal. Define a specific area and identify a specific component within that area that greatly contributes to the overall quality of a well-designed, well management and well-used EHR that complements positive health care outcomes."
1. Initiation Phase and System Concept Development Phase
The initiation phase of a project or system begins when an opportunity is identified. A manager must be appointed to manage the project. The concept proposal conations the need of the project and with the approval of the same System, Concept Development Phase begins.
Once a business need is approved, the approaches for accomplishing the concept are reviewed. Feasibility and appropriateness of the project is checked along with approval of the system or project. The scope of the project is identified and approval from senior official’s are obtained for further steps.
2. Planning Phase
The concept of the project is developed to explain the operations of the project when it is implemented and to appraise the impact of the system on employee and customer privacy. All the components like project resources, activities, schedules, tools, and reviews are defined. Accreditation process also begins with the vulnerability assessment.
3. Requirements Analysis Phase
The user needs are specifically defined in detail and delineated in terms of data, system performance, security, and maintainability requirements for the project. The requirements must be measurable and testable and directly or indirectly relate to the scope identified in the Initiation Phase.
4. Design Phase
The design phase includes the development of the physical characteristics of the system are designed during this phase. In this phase the operating environment designed, major subsystems and their inputs and outputs are established, the processes are assigned to resources. Every aspect which need the user input or approval must be documented and reviewed. The detailed design and the physical characteristics of the system are fixed. Detailed logic specifications are designed for subsystems and design units or modules.
5. Development Phase
The design phase is transformed into hardware, communications, and executable software. Software and hardware are appropriately tested in a systematic way.
6. Integration and Test Phase
All the components of the project are integrated and systematically tested in this phase. The user tests to confirm the functional requirements are met by the developed project. Certification and accreditation activities must be obtained before the installation and operation of the system in a production environment.
7. Implementation Phase
After the integration and test phase the system is operated in a controlled environment until the system is operating in production in accordance with the needs of the user.
8. Operations and Maintenance Phase
Operations and maintenance continues , till it can be effectively utilized to respond to an organization’s needs. To modify the system may reenter the planning phase.
9. Disposition Phase
Proper preservation of the data and orderly termination of the system is done, with preservation of data for further use.
Electronic health records (EHRs) is the main strategy of the federal government for the transformation of the healthcare delivery in America. The effective use of has a significant effect on laboratories and healthcare practices. Initially, a Draft Standard for Trial Use will be formulated. It includes the specifications enabling the trial prior to the full-fledged application.
The patient's Diagnostic findings are made easily available by the HER. This will help in the easy access and widespread use of the same by many concerned people. Avoidance of duplication of the procedure and easy decision making can be done by the use of EHR.
