Explain what the rational ignorance and median voter theories are (from public choice theory) and how they might influence voter turnout. Based on some quick research discuss the following main themes:
Rational ignorance theories state that voters do not educate themselves as they dont see any potential benefits of voting. Secondly median voter theory states that majority rule voting system will preferred by median voter.
The above theories influence voter turnouts to great extent as voters truly turn to vote when they see potential benefits in candidates and the maximum votes go to candidates where majority of voters tend to vote as they are highly persuasive.
USvoter turnout ranges from 55 to 60% on average past 3 elections and has been in line with other developing and developed nations like UK, Germany, Russia, China, India. The voter turnout however remains at 60% levels only because of lack of candidates which are really eligible and looked upon by people. Secondly lack of education and lack of voter IDs and its implementation in effective way is another reason.
To incentivize government must roll out mass campaign for its benefits and must advertise right candidates And lure voters to vote onlune or from their residence as well to boost turnout.
All these theories simply contradict public choice theory wherein economics analysis is applied rather than choice and preferences of voters..
