Answer these questions: “Medications administered by this route have a rapid onset of action, and calculation errors can have serious and even fatal consequences.” Why is the onset so rapid? Why are calculations for IV therapy so crucial? What can happen if the right amount of drug is pushed too fast into the bloodstream?
Intravenous medication provides immediate access to the vascular system for the rapid delivery of specific medications .This is a benefit of administering intravenous medications but can also present a risk. Therefore,it is critical ensure that the health care provider's prescriptions are checked carefully and that the correct solution or medication is administered as follows.
Intravenous calculation is very important because right dose is one of the rights in medication administration.Any drug that is given in wrong amount is harmful to the patient .With IV injection the medication is directly administere into the blood stream so if the dose is not accurate the onset of adverse reaction happens quickly ,so patient's safety is compromised when the calculations goes wrong
If the medication injected too fast it can cause speed shock ,which can lead to shock and cardiac arrest. Some othercomplications are infiltration, venous spasm, nerve or tissue damage
