Describe the human microbiome (in broad terms):
include the following:
What classes of mircrobes are represented and what type are not represented in which our microbiome is composed of?
Where is the microbiome located? (Where present, and where absent?)
One benefit that the microbiome provides (the host)?
One benefit that we provide to our microbiome?
The human microbiome consists of a wide array of microorganisms that includes, bacteria, archea, fungi, protozoa and nonliving viruses.
The microbiome is present on or within any number of tissues or biofluids such as skin, mammary glands, placenta, seminal fluid, uterus, ovarian follicles, lungs, saliva, oral cavity, conjunctiva, gasrointestinal tract and biliary tract. The microbiome is not present in the following sites: blood, CSF, bones, joint fluids, pleural fluid, pericardial fluid, peritoneal fluid.
Benefits of microbiome: The gut microbiota synthesizes a variety of vitamins, produces essential and non essential amino acids and brings about the biotransformation of bile. The microbes in the intestine produce antimicrobial compounds and prevent the colonization of pathogens.
Benefits that we provide to our microbiome: The human body provides a suitable environment for the colonization of microbes by providing them proper temperature and pH.
