Why would surgery be done on a patient with a brain tumor
Surgery is the removal of the tumor and some surrounding healthy tissue during an operation . It is usually the first treatment used for a brain tumor. It is often the only treatment needed bfor alow grade brain tumor. Removing the tumor can provide neurological symptoms , provide tissue for diagnosis and genetic analysis , help make other brain tumor treatment more effective and in many instances , improve the prognosis of aperson witha brain tumor.
Description of the common types of treatment used for abrain tumor are listed below:- our care plan may also include treatment for symptoms and side effects , an important part of our Medical care.
Treatment options anrecommendations depend on several factors:-
Some types of brain tumors grow rapidly , other tumors grow slowly . Considering all these factors our doctor will talk with us about how soon treatment should start after diagnosis.
Successful treating brain tumors can be challenging . The body's blood brain barrier normally protects the brain and spinal cord from harmful chemicals . However , the barrier also keeps out many types pf chemotherapy. Surgery can be difficult if the tumor is near a delicate part of the brain or spinal cord. Even when the surgeon can completely remove the original tumor , parts of the tumors may remain that are too small to be seen or removed during surgery. Radiation therapy can also damage healthy tissues.
Types of brain surgery
there are several different types of brain surgery. The type used depends on the problem being treated.
Craniotomy
A craniotomy involves making an incision in the scalp and creating a hole known as abone flap in the skull. The hole and incision are made near the area of the being treated.
Biopsy
This procedure is used to remove a small amount of brain tissue or a tumor so it can be examined under a microscope and hole in the skull.
Minimum invasive endonasal endoscopic surgery.
This type of surgery allows our surgeon to remove tumors or lesion through our nose and sinuses . It allows them to access parts of our brain. The procedure involves the use of an endoscope, which is a telescopic device equipped with light and camera so the surgeon can see where they're working.. our doctor can use this for tumors on the pituitary gland , tumors on the base of the s , and tumors growing at the bottom part if the brain.
Minimally invasive neuroendoscopy
similar to minimally invasive endonasal endoscopic surgery, neuroendoscopy uses endoito remove brain tumor .our surgeon may make small , dime- sized hokes in the skull to access parts of our brain during this surgery.
Deep brain stimulation.
As with a biopsy , this procedure involves making a small hole in the skull , but instead of removing a piece of tissue , our surgeon will insert a small electrode will be connected to a battery at the chest, like a pacemaker , and electrical signals will be determined to help symptoms of different disorders , such as Parkinson's disease.
Recovery from brain surgery depends on the type of procedure done . A typical hospital stay for brain surgery can last up to aweak or mire . The length of our hospital stay will depend on how well our body responds to yhe surgery . We'll be on pain medication during this time.
