1. Holotype must be designated
- It must be ensured that the specimen acts as the identifier for
the entire species
- No strain specific characteristic must be used for
identification because that feature might not be present in other
strains of same species
- Any such additional features are called paratypes and they must
also be identified by a a taxonomist
2. A description of the new species is necessary
- The new species must be defined on various parameters like
behaviour, anatomy, morphology, etc
- The information regarding the origin of the holotypes and
paratypes must be provided
- A new name is then assigned to it : the genus and the
species
3. Publishing of the data in open domain
- The new data must be published in a form that is accessible
worldwide
- The advent of information era has made this process area
because publishing in electronic/digital form of the data is also
permissible
