Resocialization - It is a process in which the previous roles values or we can say belief of an individual are changed or re-engineered .In this the value or roles the individual was using undergoes a change . In this mainly adults learn new cultures , new norms when they are exposed to new environments . As we know, total institutions are the institutions which control all aspects of an individual's personality and life . So let us take an example for any of the total institutions. In prisons the inmates are moulded in a way that they shed their old norms and belief systems .The process involves two parts .

  • In the first part the authority or we can say staff attempts to control the identity and indeomednec of the inmate .This involves allowing behaviors and restricting other kinds of behaviors .Individuals are not allowed to take many of the simple life decisions .
  • In the second part authorities try to develop a different kind of personality . This involves new belief systems new behaviors and cultural knowledge

In these institutions the process is more radicalized as compared to normal life resocialization .
