what is meant by near-transfer versus far-transfer
Near transfer and far transfer are the two types of transfer of learning.Transfer of learning is defined as the ability to apply knowledge and information learned in one context to other new context. It is useful in conceptual learning, skill development and learning principles.
Example: Learning to drive a car helps a person to later drive a truck.
It is important because if there is no transfer, students would need to be taught every act that they would ever perform in any situation. According to Bransford, All new learning involves transfer based on previous learning.
Near Transfer: Transfer of learning between very similar contexts. It occurs when training or learning context and learned behaviour that are most identical to the application context and application behaviour.
Example:When a mechanic repairs an engine in a new model of car, but with a design similar to prior models.
Far transfer: Transfer of learning between contexts that seem alien to one another. It is a referred as "high road transfer". It often requires insight or judgement not required by near transfer.
Example: A chess may apply basic strategies to investment practices or policies.
