Consider the following mechanism: NO + O3 => NO3 + O NO3 + O => NO2 + O2 What is the role of NO?
Solution:
The given mechanism is the catalytic ozone (O3) depletion by nitrous oxide (NO). Nitrous oxide is very stable but when reaches into stratosphere, it become unstable by absorbing the high ultaviolet radiations. In stratosphere, it reacts with ozone.
Here, NO is working as a catalyst who initiates the depletion of ozone by reacting with it to form nascent oxygen.
O3 + NO = NO3 + O ( nascent oxygen)
NO3 + O = NO2 + O2
Thus, the role of NO is to break the O3 into O2 + O.
