Summary on the article " Why children get leukemia?"
Leukemia is a type of carcinoma affecting the white blood cells, attacking the immune system and the bone marrow. The pathology behind leukemia is that there will be stunted maturation of white blood cells and gets accumulated in the bone marrow and may burst out to the blood stream. Leukemia are classified into two types based on its chronicity - Acute myeloid leukemia, Acute lymphocytic leukemia etc and Chronic.
Among these Acute lymphocytic leukemia is that which is commonly seen in children accounting for 1/4th of all childhood carcinomas. The etiology is till unknown why these Acute onset carcinoma affect children. Several studies even though been conducted, didint come to a conclusion on what can be the real cause for it. Some genetic changes were noted on DNA tests, but it only reveals that these genetic materials are pointing out to an uncontrolled growth of cancerous cells.
Different variations of DNA changes can result in a cell becoming cancerous, like chromosome translocation which tends to occur before birth in childhood leukaemia. 23 pairs of chromosome cells organise the DNA. On translocation, DNA from one chromosome breaks off and attaches to other chromosome. These are genes encoding for the proteins help the cells to stay alive, grow or divide abnormally, and thus become cancerous.
