1 - It is noted in the past that structure has been built on soil which is inadequate to sustain large pressure of large building. Insufficient bearing capacity of soil is also one of the main cause of foundation failure. the main issue which need to be considered while designing foundation are following
(i) Drag down & heave,
(ii) Lateral movements,
(iii) Load transfer failures,
(iv) Vibrating effects,
(v) Floating & water level changes,
(vi) Design & Construction errors,
(vii) Earthquakes,
(viii) Uplift forces,
(ix) Slope instability/landslide.
2- There are some topics which is related to EGR 354 are Lateral earth pressures, retaining wall design, elastic stress distribution, settlement, and bearing capacity of foundation systems.
3- when expansive soil like clay swell it cause building to lift and heave. which damaged the foundation of building. If the filling material on a lot is not compact enough to bear the weight of the above structure, fundamental problems can arise. creep is used for slope failure which illustrate the movement of earth downhill. Erosion can be the settlement problem's most simple and direct cause. It may result from standing water, unregulated flow of water.
4- To retain the building's structural integrity, the foundation must be supported by providing underpinning. the fill material should be compacted such that no air void left during compaction. From the construction site, the topsoil is erased and its roots are eliminated. Any cyst is churned up and packed with concrete. In order to prevent failure of the foundation due to uplift force , load transfer failure , the foundation depth shall be risen to the hard strata or rock under the filled soil or pile fo--undations.
