Union membership has fallen steadily in recent decades in part because many unionized manufacturing jobs have been shipped overseas. Do you believe that unions will make a comeback in new industries? Would you prefer to be a member of a union if you had a choice? Why or why not?
Unions are formed for the protection of interests of workers. The union represents all of the employees, irrespective of whether a worker wants or does not want to be represented. Unionization would be beneficial for various industries including the fast food joints, call centers, big box retail units and hospitals. The company may neither bargain directly with the employees in the union, nor with any other organization which represents them.
The low paid service workers are able to unionize like the factory workers could a century ago. The economy would boom for generations to come with all that extra money everybody would be making. Thus it is not a totally outdated idea to move into the unionization in the recent future as this has many privileges too. The union may not favor some members over others, nor may a union discriminate against a member based on characteristics such as race or gender.
