The dietary factors or nutrition requirements include total energy intake, carbohydrates, protein, fats, fiber, iron, calcium, and cholesterol. During childhood, malnourishment causes kids to have less energy, less interest for learning, slow brain development, etc, which has a negative influence on academic performance and cognitive development. Malnourishment also affects body weight, height, growth rate, etc. Deficiencies of nutrients like iodine and iron can sometimes cause irreversible impairment of cognitive and motor development. Many other nutrients like folic acid, choline, zinc, etc have been found to be linked to early brain development and functioning. Nutrition in fact has a complex effect on the development of the brain. Poor diet also affects kids’ behavior and was found to be associated with diseases like ADHD, ADD, etc. Children who eat junk foods on a regular without considering nutritional value are more likely to develop behavioral issues.
