(A) PLANES OF BODY:-
1. Coronal (frontal) plane:-
- it is a vertical plane running from side to side.
- it divides the body into anterior and posterior portions.

2. Sagittal (lateral) plane:-
- it is a vertical plane running from front to back.
- it divides the body or any of its parts into right and left sides.

3. Axial(transverse) plane:-
-it is a horizontal plane.
-it divides the body or any of its parts into upper and lower parts.

4. Median plane:- Sagittal plane through the midline of the body.
- it divides the body or any of its parts into right and left halves.


(B) BODY CAVITIES AND THEIR ORGANS:-

1. THORACIC CAVITY:-
- it is bounded laterally by the ribs and the diaphragm caudally.
- It contains the heart, lungs, trachea, esophagus, large blood vessels, and nerves.

2. ABDOMINAL CAVITY:-
- It is bounded cranially by the diaphragm, laterally by the body wall, and caudally by the pelvic cavity.
- it contains most of the GIT, kidneys and adrenal glands.

3. PELVIC CAVITY:-
- It is bounded cranially by the abdominal cavity, dorsally by the sacrum, and laterally by the pelvis.
- The pelvic cavity contains most of the urogenital system as well as the rectum.

4. DORSAL CAVITY:-
-It contains organs lying more posterior in the body.
-it can be divided into two portions.
(i) upper portion (cranial cavity)- contain brain,  
(ii) lower portion (vertebral canal)- contain spinal cord.
