The health status of indigenous people world wide varies according to their unique historical ,social circumstances and political, Disparities in health beteween Maoris and non Maoris have been evident for all of the colonial history. Government initiated public health services and Maori controlled health promotion programs,this decreases the mortality were probabily influenced by the introduction of a national health care scheme and social welfare system. Significant proportiion of the excess mortality among Maoris stems from diseases for which effective health care is available suggesting differences in access to health care,Maoris are less likely to be reffered for surgical care and specialist services and that given disparities in mortality,cost is a significant barrier to Maoris access to health services. Maori led programs designed to improve health care assess are taking a 2 fold approach that supports bothe the development of health care provider services and the enhancement of mainstream services through provision of culturally safe care.
