How could batch culture and continuous cultures benefit different types of organisms?
This question is for my microbio class
ANSWER -
BATCH CULTURE | CONTINUOUS CULTURE |
a technique in which microbes are produced contiually in which nutrients are conitinually supplied to the fermenter. | microorganism grow in limited supply of nutrients, which decline when these are used up or someother factor become limiting |
a open system | a closed system |
yield is high | yield is low |
labor is more | labor demand is low |
chance of contamination is more | less chance of contamination |
small ferments are used | large ferments are used |
turnover is high | turnover is low |
sutiable for the production of primary metabolites such as organic acids and amino acids | suitable for the production of secondary metabolites such as antibiotics |
process continues and the yields are coninually removed from the fermenter | whole process is stopped when the product is formed |
lag and log phase are maintained | lag and log phase and stationary phase occur |
nutrients are continually added through out the process, thus they are not a limiting factor | nutrients are added at the beginning of the process, thus they are limiting factor |
these are few of the basic difference between the batch culture and the continuous culture
