Write a paragraph on the mechanism of thyroid stimulating hormone. Using the following pathway:
Hypothalamus—> TRH—> blood —> Anterior pituitary—> TSH—> blood —> thyroid gland

Solutions

Expert Solution

Answer

  • Hypothalamus releases a hormone known as thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH). TRH travels via the hypophyseal portal system to the anterior pituitary gland. TRH stimulates the release of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) also known as thyrotropin. Anterior pituitary secretes TSH into blood and it travels to the thyroid gland. TSH acts on follicular cells of thyroid gland. It increases iodide transport to follicular cells enhancing the iodination of thyroglobin. This stimulates the production thyroid hormones T3 (triiodothyronin) and T4 (thyroxine) from thyroid gland. Release of TSH from anterior pituary gland depends upon the levels of thyroid hormones in the blood. When the levels of thyroid hormones are high in blood, a negative feedback mechanism inhibits the release of TSH and when the levels of thyroid hormone are low in blood, anterior pituitary gland produces more TSH hormone.
