Compare and contrast crustaceans with insects using just these characteristics: habitat, locomotion, respiration, excretion, and appendages
Ans- Crustaceans Vs. Insects
1. Habitat
Insects are found in almost all ecosystems on Earth, oceans being rare. Whereas, the crustaceans are generally found in water usually oceanic regions.
2. Locomotion
Insects have 3 pairs of legs and 2 pairs of wings. On the other hand, the crustaceans posses more than 4 pairs of jointed legs. Crustaceans typically have branched appendages that are extensively specialized for feeding and locomotion.
3. Respiration
The tracheal system is the most important organ for aerial respiration. This chitin-lined tube is visible in all land dwelling arthropods such as insects, centipedes, millipedes etc. Whereas the crustaceans as they dwell in water respire through gills. Gills are the respiratory organs of aquatic arthropods.
4. Excretion-
In insects, nitrogenous waste are expelled as Uric acid crystals. The mineral salts and uric acid accumulates in the Malphigian tubules and then are expelled through the anus. On the other hand, crustaceans possess an excretory organ called the green gland or the antennal gland.
5. Appendages
Insects possess appendages that are unbranched at the ends but in crustaceans the appendages are mostly branched at the end.
