Steps in the development of writing in Mesopotamia are as follows-
a) Clay tokens which were used to represent units of commodities and merchandise around 3500 B.C. prevalant in the farm economy at that time in various shapes.
b) Clay token were placed in sealed envelope containers around 3500 B.C to 3100 B.C.to keep record of the debts which represented the amount of dues with the help of token numbers
c) Token impressed into clay took place around 3000 B.C revolutionising the shape of the token into two dimension. This stage was marked as the invention of writing as tokens were marked into clay ending the accounting system which used clay tokens.
d) Symbols impressed into clay with stylus at the end of 3000 B.C when picture of the most complex tokens were done by tracing signs with a pointed reed stylus.
e) More elaborate slay tokens with markings were started using in the later years which transformed the writing of accounts to a new level.
