Lets first know what is meant by gender and sexuality..........
GENDER : this refers to either of the the two sexes(male and female) especially when considered with reference to social and cultural differences rather than biological ones. The term is broadly used to denote a range of identities.
SEXUALITY : Human sexuality is the way people experience themselves sexually. This involves biological, physical, emotional, social or spiritual feelings and behaviors.
VIEWS ON GENDER ISSUES:
Public around the world express egalitarian (believing in or based on the principle that all people are equal and deserve equal rights and opportunities) views about gender roles in education and political leadership.Overwhelming majorities in the 47 countries surveyed say it is equally important for boys and girls to receive an education.
The term gender role was coined by JOHN MONEY where he defined it as " all those things that a person says or does to disclose himself or herself as having the status of boy or man, girl or woman.A persons gender is complex encompassing countless characteristics of appearance , speech, movement and other factors not related to biological sex.Societies tend to have a binary gender systems in which everyone is categorized as male or boy and woman or female.
Socialization theory offers a straight forward account of gendered identities.Infants are seen as blank slates waiting to be written down by their environment.Though their interactions with people close to them and exposure to the values of their society infants learn what sex is attributed to them and what roles they are expected to learn.Parents and family can influence the way that a child develops their view on gender. These types of influences can include parental attitudes and difference of treatment regarding male and female children.
Gender equality is one of the most important sustainable development goals of united nations.UNICEF says gender equality means " that women and men and girls and boys enjoy the same rights, resources, opportunities and protections.Gender equality between men and women entails the concept that all human beings both men and women are free to develop their own personal abilities and make choices without limitations.
Some common gender definitions include:
TRANSGENDER : most often used to describe non traditional gender behaviors or identities.
TRANSSEXUAL : refered to as individuals identified as the opposite gender to their biological sex.
INTERSEX: this refers to a range of conditions where a person's sex is not strictly male of female. This may be because of the presence of both male and female sex characteristics.
SEXUALITY :
Sexuality encompasses both sexual behavior and sexual desire.Human sexuality is the way people experience and express themselves sexually. This involves biological, physical, emotional, social or spiritual feelings and behaviors.Physical and emotional aspects of sexuality include bonds between individuals that expressed through feelings , love ,trust and care.Social aspects deal with the effects of human society on one's sexuality, while spirituality concerns an individuals spiritual connection with others.Sexuality also affects and is affected by cultural, political, legal, philosophical, moral, ethical and religious aspects of life.
Human sexuality can be understood as part of the social life of humans, which is governed by behavior and status. The civil rights movement helped in bringing massive changes in social norms like sexual revolution and the rise of feminism.
Some theorists identify sexuality as the central source of human personality.Physiological studies of sexuality focus on physiological influences that affect sexual behavior and experiences.
Terminology associated with sexuality includes :
HETEROSEXUAL : refers to when people tend to be attracted to the opposite sex or gender.
BISEXUAL : refers to individuals who are attracted to both genders.
ASEXUAL : refers to individuals who do not or have not yet experienced any attraction to any gender/anyone.
