How might the principle of beneficence come into conflict with the principle of respect for autonomy in the context of consent-by-proxy? Can such conflicts be resolved? Why or why not?
Principle of beneficence :
It is the moral obligation to take action or measures for the benefit of others i.e.by balancing benefits and risks of the other.
Principles of of respect for autonomy :
It is enabling patients to make their own decisions about their health care. They have the right to decide which intervention they will and will not recieve.
There is a delicate balance the principle of respect for autonomy and principle of beneficence.
Example. Before giving a treatment, a physician should listen and consider patient 's wishes or their opinions at the same time the physician should should do what is best for the patient. A risk versus benefit scale is considered.
If the patient' s wishes are opposite to the right doing, there can be a conflict between the principle of respect for autonomy and principle of beneficence.
To avoid this conflict the only thing that can be done is to convince the patient in what is best for the patient and if possible taking a treatment decision that can satisfy at least the main condition of the patient.
