You are a new assistant in a medical practice, and a patient arrived bleeding, looking pale, and in pain. As a professional, what would be your perception of the need for care of this patient? What would be your first action? Now reflect on what you decided, and explain why you made that decision.
In emergency department many patients come who needs priority
assessment and immediate interventions.
When the patient arrives bleeding, looking pale and in pain,
firstly the patient should be assessed for patent airway. After
ensuring the airway is clear and free from obstruction, assess for
the breathing. Assess the patient's breathing rate and pattern. If
patient is not able to breath provide artificial means of
ventilation. Then assess for circulation. Maintain adequate
perfusion to the brain, body tissues and other organs. Control
bleeding by identifying the site of injury and perform wound
closure through sutures and dressing. If the blood lost through
bleeding is heavy prepare for blood transfusion. Provide pain
relief medications, antibiotics and other medications as required
for pain relief and infection control.
Monitor the patient for vital signs such as blood pressure, oxygen
saturation, respirating rate, pulse.
