you are the medical assistant working in a pediatric clinic today you have a patient who has been diagnosed with strep throat this little one will be prescribed antibiotics to be taken over the next ten days how would this drug be classified and what information regarding the drug would you want to give to the patient's parent
Answer :
Penicillin or Amoxicillin(amoxil). These drugs considered as the first line treatment for strep throat because they are safe, inexpensive also they work best for the bacteria.
Here treatment given is for 10days so it must be either penicillin or Amoxicillin
Instructions to the parent : will give instructions and educate them about the antibiotic usage.
*)Antibiotic(Amoxil or penicillin) must be taken for strep throat last about 10days. The medication has to be taken strictly to the 10days without missing.
Kids usually feels better a day or two after they start them.
Even after kids start to feel better, the course or all the pills for 10 days has to be finished otherwise some bacteria alive in the throat and again worsen the condition.
If strep is not fully treated, it might lead to complications such as:
If the kid stop taking antibiotics too soon, the bacteria that cause strep can become resistant to the medication. That means another case of strep would be much harder to control.
So the 10day couse is very important.
*)Also give instructions that if the kid got any allergy during during the course then immediately inform the medical care.
*)And the kid can send outside after 48hrs after the disease symptoms decreased.
*)The drug should be mixed with the water or milk and given to avoid the swallowing problem also should never given to chew. The drug must be taken according to the prescription.
*)Other drugs which may cause the interaction (other antibiotic) should not be given.
