What constitutes a Criminal Enterprise?” and “What is your view of the evolution of Organized Crime and how will it look in the future?”
The FBI defines a criminal enterprise as a "group of individuals with an identified hierarchy, bit comparable structure, engaged in significant criminal activity."
Organised crime is a highly organized, disciplined association run by criminals who intend to engage in illegal activity, mostly for money and profit. These gangs become disciplined enough to be considered organized. In 1968, the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act defined organized crime as "the unlawful activities of the members of a highly organized, disciplined association engaged in supplying illegal goods and services, including but not limited to gambling, prostitution, loan sharking, narcotics, labor racketeering, and other unlawful activities of members of such organizations."
Starting in the 1970s and increasing in the early 1990s, a new form of organized crime took hold of the world. The combination of a new geopolitical climate, globalized world economy and resulting softer porous borders as well as revolution in information technology available to crime groups accelerated a shift. Crime groups started widening there tentacles from domestic grounds to global networks with other criminal groups. This slowly in a period of time transitioned from a domestic concern to an international problem. Current trends that may fuel the rise of organized crime include: recession, where people would seek refuge in increased consumption of drugs as well as engaging in activities such as betting and gambling. Next the emergence of failed states would also open opportunities for organized crime groups to cash reserves to gain influence among elites in the political, financial, and military spheres. In the future a number of people in the developing nations will gain access to the web and they may become victims of online scammers since these nations don't have the necessary infrastructure to defend their citizens.
