How does the idea of the "Cult of Domesticity" fit into this debate about work and freedom
The cult of domesticity is also referred to as the cult of true womanhood. This term has even used by people for the system that had been going on in the 19th century in the upper and middle class that existed in the Great Britain and the United States. This was the system that talked about feminity and the fact that women play a major role in the home dynamics. This idea said that women who are true in themselves, should be having four virtues referred to as domesticity, purity, piety as well as submissiveness.
Why this idea revolves around work is that it says that women are the ones who hold the house and are the central piece around which the house revolves, with them being the string that carries out the beads of pearls. Women unify the family by carrying out all the household work from nurturing and taking care of the children to making the house s place to live in. Here, women are known to work as unpaid labour’s, in the service of the house, with the workload never ceasing, rather increasing. They are believed to be working 24x7, without any leaves, and work increasing when the family members would be on leave or st the time of a festive season. Hence, the cult of domesticity corresponds to the unpaid labour carried out by women for the endless time.
