write a half page essay on what role does discrimination play in determining who is poor and the extent of poverty?
Discrimination also hurts the weak. Discrimination has plenty to
do with powerlessness, with a minority identity, and this can also
lead to economic inequality, too.
It is a dual connection and a complicated model relationship, given
that you have good data.
Discrimination definitely causes deprivation, manifested in higher
unemployment, higher long-term unemployment, payments for social
services, lower wages relative to the non-discriminated
population.
Poverty may also separate certain individuals, and place a social
stigma on them, leading to discrimination.
When one becomes socially disadvantaged, so one is marginalized
automatically in more ways than one. Yet when one is discriminated
against, the reason may not be because of deprivation. And the
partnership is not inherently two-sided. For example, in a
developing world a person living below the poverty line can not
afford to fly by air.
Yet if a person is unable to travel by air, this does not mean that
the person is economically backward; it could be that due to a
physical disability the person can not fly.
Human rights activists have long known that prejudice and poverty are closely linked. Although there is no disaggregated data available for each disadvantaged group, recent statistics show that more than two-thirds of extremely poor people in low-income and low-middle-income countries live in households where the head of household is from an ethnic minority community. It also tells us that over three quarters of the extreme poor live in rural areas
Moreover, more than 80 percent of people with disabilities live in developing countries, highlighting both the confluence of poverty and disability and the importance of proactively addressing the development strategies needs of people with disabilities.
