1. The pharmacist adds 12.5 grams of dextrose to 50ml of water. What percentage of dextrose is this solution?
2. Your order reads give 3000ml of NS over 24 hours. You will use at 20gtt set. How many gtt per minute will run? Round to nears whole number.
3. You have an order for 60ml per hour of drug X. You have 60 gtt set available. How many gtt/min will run?
1. 12.5 g in 50 ml solution
In 100 ml contains 25 g ( 12.5 ×2)
Percentage of dextrose = 25 %
2. Total volume ÷ time in minute multiples by the drop factor = IV flow rate
Total volume = 3000ml
Time in minute = 24 × 60 = 1440
Drop factor = 20 gtts/ min
IV flow rate = ( 3000÷ 1440 ) × 20
= 41.6 ie, 42
3. Total volume = 60 ml
Time in minute = 60 min
Drop factor = 60gtts / min
Flow rate = (60 ÷60 ) × 60
= 60
