A violence or act include the physical assaults or threats of assaults directed towards a person at work or while on duty.
Workplace violence against the staff nurses has significantly increased in the past decades. Recent survey reported as21percentage of registered staff nurses and nursing students reported being physically assaulted and 50percentage verbally abused in 12 month period. 12 percentage emergency department nurses experienced physical violence59percentage experienced verbal abuse during a seven day period.
Workplace violence in nursing has effects on workers health and it's reduced the level of efficiency and productivity in health care,has a negative impact on nurse's quality of working life,job satisfaction level, and their willingness to stay in the job may result in increased stress level and absenteeism can result in chronic fatigue and sleep. That's why it is an important topic in nursing.
Solutions to reduce the violence in workplace
Each institution should develop workplace violence prevention programme through this programme we can give continuous employee training and awareness and to adapt specific situation or specific facilities carefully.
Another solution to increase the penalities for assault of nurses.
Encourage the leaders in the health care to establish standards of conduct and policies for managers and employees to reduce workplace bullying and promote healthyful and safe environment.
Incident documentation and evaluation is very important .It is a vital success of any workplace safety programme .Keeping a record of incidentsand investigating them properly prevents from repeating.
