If the nuclear binding energy of an atom of Be-9 is 9.6979 x 10-12 J/atom, calculate the atomic mass of the nuclide.
Given nuclear binding energy of Be atom is E= 9.6979 x 10-12 J
We know that binding energy , E = mc2
Where m = mass of Be
c = speed of light = 3.0x108 m/s
Plug the values we get m = E / c2
= (9.6979 x 10-12 J) / (3.0x108 m/s)2
= 1.078x10-28 kg
= (1.078x10-28 kg)/( 1.66x10-27 kg/mu) Since 1 amu = 1.66x10-27 kg
= 0.0649 amu
