Throughout this course, you have viewed the "Diary of Medical Mission Trip" videos dealing with the catastrophic earthquake in Haiti in 2010. Reflect on this natural disaster by answering the following questions:
1. Propose one example of a nursing intervention related to the disaster from each of the following levels: primary prevention, secondary prevention, and tertiary prevention. Provide innovative examples that have not been discussed by a previous student.
2.Under which phase of the disaster do the three proposed interventions fall?
3. Explain why you chose that phase. With what people or agencies would you work in facilitating the proposed interventions and why? Link to the "Diary of Medical Mission Trip" videos: http://lc.gcumedia.com/zwebassets/courseMaterialPages/nrs427v_nrs427v.php
Diary of medial mission trip:
Nursing intervention:
Primary prevention:
It is a continuum with intervention prevention before
it occur..in this case primary prevention immediate after
earthquake who had pain and wound in their hands and legs and their
body..as a primary prevention caring them provide wound care by
dressing, and immobilize the area by providing splint to prevent
fracture..Shift them to a safe and calm area where they can have
take rest after their first aid treatment..
secondary prevention:
this is to reduce the impact of a disease or
injury that has already occured..for example people after this
earthquake most of the had fracture, blood loss, head injuryand
fainting..must be get immediate attention by taking them to triage
area near by hospital and provide surgical intervention those who
need immedaitely for fracture and head injury..Provide fluid
replacement and and monitor vitals for the patient..If patient
needed with severe breathlessness can provide oxygen..
Tertiary prevention:
this is to soften the impact of on ongoing illness or
injury that has lasting effects..With this earthquake most of the
people lost their consiousness and there is a permanent impairment
and chronic illness..for children especially they lost their
home,school etc..Rehabilitation program,disease management programs
and support groups to share strategies for living well..provide
psychological support to avoid depression and anxiety..
Phases:
The first phase focuses on triaging patients who need life and limb
saving care..
The second phase involves caring for patients who were able to
survive the first days without medical care..plastic and general
surgeons can aid in the management of major wounds and try limb
salvage..
The third phase represents the response to a humanitarian
response..here all medical specialists and personal can help
managing health for the people..
UNICEF will provide supplies along with other UN
agencies to provide supplies to allow to access to sanitation, asfe
water and basic health care..Prepare material and advisors will
take care of children to continue their education and provided
recreational area to rebuild their lives..Because food, water and
shelter important for all humans for their lives..So it is
important to get support from these agencies to acheive the
plan..
