In intercultural relationships people belonging to different
cultures and faiths are involved.Uncertainty plays a big factor in
either making or breaking the relationship since incomplete or lack
of knowledge about each other's culture sets the ground.
Interacting with a stranger from a different culture typically
involves more uncertainty than when interacting with a stranger
from one's native culture. Uncertainty refers to the amount of
predictability; that is, what is known about another person. With
strangers, very little is known. During initial encounters with a
stranger, uncertainty triggers anxiety.
Uncertainty and anxiety are closely linked. When strangers
first meet, their primary goal is to reduce uncertainty and
increase predictability of their own and the other person's
behavior. In order to accomplish this, they use specific
communication strategies. How an individual reduces uncertainty
varies across cultures.
If one is uncertain about communicating intercultural, they may
find to miss expanded opportunities for employment, potential
income, development of wisdom and knowledge, an understanding of
another person’s expectations, and increase the risk of a
misunderstanding along the way.
For intercultural communication does not merely mean
understanding another person’s linguistic code, but also a deeper
understanding of why people react the way they do, any unique body
language, the motivations of a person, another person’s worldview
and understanding of how the world is organized, and so forth.
