What is the role of Gibberellins (GAs) in the plant? How does the GA signalling pathway work? What role did GA play in the green revolution? Using examples, describe and discuss.
Role of gibberilins in the plant
Gibberilins help in the growth and development of plant such as they promote cell elongation, flowering, fruit ripening.
GA signalling pathway
The important receptor involved in the signalling is DELLA ptoteins. They targer certain factors such as phytochrome interacting factors (PIFs) which is a transcription factor helping in the light signalling and promotes growth elongation.
Other targets of DELLA proteins are prefoldins and microtubule assembly whuch assist in the folding of other proteins. Prefoldin get reduced and thereby DELLA are degraded. Pregoldin move to cytosol and assist in beta-tubulin folding which is a vital component of cytoskeleton. Cytoskeleton help in elongation.
Role of GA in green revolution
Gibberilins is a protein which help in the plant development. It can be employed in agriculture to increase crop yield and new crop development. One of example is GA used in the higher yield of citrus.
