Bullying has become a major issue in schools across the U.S. What are the best ways to reduce bullying behavior in schools? What role does the school play? What role do parents play? What is the role of society and/or lawmakers?
It’s really very sad thing that even in this digital, informative and technological world people engage in bullying based on various factors such as, physical appearance, skin color, accent, race, religion, economic status etc. One of the most important reasons for this is that most of the attitudes, value system and personality traits are picked up from the parents and they have a major role in shaping the worldview of their children. Parents need to help the children develop an open and tolerant mind-set where they would be able understand that everyone in this world has an equal place to occupy and an equal role to play. This would also mean that the parents need to help the children mingle with people from all the backgrounds in order to develop tolerance and openness. Schools on the other hand should introduce multicultural classrooms and encourage the group tasks that would include everyone from different backgrounds. Schools should also have counseling facility for those who engage in bullying. Law makers should have strict measures to control those who bully others. They should also provide enough social support to children who do not have proper parental support.
