The Amish
The Amish are aChristian group in the United States which are culturally very distinct in their behavior and beliefs.
HHealth disparities
The Amish were found to have a greater incidence of bleeding disorders such as von willebrand disease, haemilophilia B, genetic disorders such as dwarfism, and metabolic disorders such as Tay Sachs disease.
High incidence of dental acties was also seen among the Amish children, as they do not view preventive oral health care as a priority.
Amish children are also not vaccinated.
The Amish women with breast cancer have a high mortality rate, as they do not seek medical care promptly.
Behaviours and beliefs
The Amish believe in God as the ultimate healer, do not seek medical treatment frequently and do not view preventive health care as a priority.
Most of them are uninsured despite the government insurance available to them.
They have a low health literacy and literacy in general.
They are also a patriarchal society, where the men in the family make the decisions for the women, even regarding healthcare.
