EFFECT OF YOGA AND MEDITATION ON HEALTH OUTCOMES OF CHRONIC DISEASES
Yoga is an ancient art of bringing mind, body, and spirits together, the word ‘yoga us derived from Sanskrit word “yug”, which means to yoke or to join together. There are many forms of yoga they are raja yoga, hatha yoga, ashtanga yoga, iyengar yoga, and bikram yoga.
There are many important things that have been notified in the yoga, like Raja yoga mainly involves mediation, Hatha yoga, involves notion of life energy (prana), which is a driving force for the mind and body, Ashtanga yoga achieves by harmonizing breathing with movements whereas Iyengar yoga is to take control of the mind by using postural regulations. Bikram yoga that is practiced under hot and humid conditions, lastly the laughter yoga uses combination of laughter and exercise.
There are many beneficial effects of yoga on health and wellbeing and this is very much understood and studied by various researchers. COPD, a major chronic disease has been brought under control using ashtanga yoga and iyengar yoga. Cancer has claimed many lives around the world, cancer patients were able bring their stress under control using yoga. Further research has also found that many cardio vascular diseases were resolved and brought under control by practicing yoga. Recent reports have found that yoga improves immunity of the people controls cytokine levels and endorphin levels, cytokine’s modulate inflammatory process and endorphins excitation and addiction. Hence seeing all these factors it can be said that yoga is beneficial in management of chronic disorders. Yoga as a complementary and alternative therapy for chronic diseases and can help older adults to maintain their health.
