what is an ethical resolution for reducing falls in patients with dementia?
Answer: Dementia may be defined as a set of symptoms, which involves loss of memory, mood changes and problems with thinking, orientation, comprehension, calculation, learning capacity, language, and judgement. These symptoms tend to develop gradually over a lengthy period of time, as the brain becomes impaired due to damage from the underlying dementia condition.
Ethical behaviour in relation to caring for a person with
dementia and living with dementia is more than
a question of rights and duties. It cannot be merely reduced to a
set of abstract principles. It is important to consider in addition
the lived experiences of people with dementia and their carers
(e.g. in relation to caregiving, care receiving, vulnerability and
dignity. The increasing severity of the symptoms and the need for
both assistance and understanding may make it more difficult to
keep dementia private and result in greater involvement of the
wider family, friends and professional carers.
