What are your thoughts about what blaming people for various illnesses and perceived weaknesses say about the society that propagates that type of attitude?
Blaming people for illnesses is something that has been practiced in society for a very long time, especially with mental and physical illnesses such as psychosis, schizophrenia, leprosy, AIDS etc.
In the early 20th century people affected by diseases such as leprosy or any mental illnesses were considered to be cursed by god and blamed for their condition, often kept in severe inhuman condition. This early practices that are still prevalent in certain under developed countries like the ones in Africa tells us about the lack of a scientific and rational attitude in the society. Also a tendency towards magical beliefs is reflected through these practices.
In today's Era people with mental illness are often blamed for it. The blame isn't related to magical beliefs like wrath of God but that the person doesn't want to get well. This reflects a general lack of awareness, empathy and sensitivity of the society as a whole.
