(2) You are presenting to a group of high school students on the dangers of substance abuse. Explains the behavioral criteria
The DSM-5 lists out 4 main behavioral categories that are used as diagnostic criteria for substance use disorders:
1.Impaired control: This refers to substance use in larger quantities or for longer durations than intended. It also refers to an inability to curb or reduce substance consumption, despite efforts.
2.Social impairment: This refers to the problems that arise in personal, academic, and/or professional life due to prolonged substance usage. There is a negative impact on interpersonal relationships and reduced engagement in meaningful social and recreational activities.
3.Risky use: This criterion indicates a continued use of the substance despite awareness of the psychological and physical harm it can cause.
To be diagnosed with a substance-use disorder, an individual need to exhibit at least two of the aforementioned behaviors. The severity of the disorder is determined by the number of criteria met.
